Tool Grinder / Machinist
Perform a variety of duties of a training nature in assigned Fabricator/Quick Response area.  Under instruction of a higher classified Machinist personnel or supervisor, perform a variety of fabricating/quick response duties to acquire sufficient skill in order to qualify for the Machinist Spec. classification.  Perform other duties as assigned.  Keep own work area clean and orderly.  Refer any problems to higher classification Fabricator/Quick Response personnel or Supervisor 

The position of Tool Grinder / Machinist is responsible for all the listed items and additional efforts associated to support production repair requirements. The Tool Grinder is responsible for pin, bushing, cutting tool and tooling support related to actions required from the Grind Room.

Ideal candidates will possess the ability and understanding of tool grinding methodologies, blueprint reading, measurement methods (calipers, micrometers, bore and other associated gages). The machinist will be expected to be able to perform traditional machining efforts on Bridgeport’s and lathes along with the tool grinding. The employee as part of the Tooling Group will be required to support the group as needed with efforts including product loads, PTI efforts and inspection support / repair of tools.

Job Duties and Tasks for:

Compute numbers, widths, and angles of cutting tools, micrometers, scales, and gauges, and adjust tools to produce specified cuts.
File or finish surfaces of workpieces, using prescribed hand tools.
Fit parts together in preassembly to ensure that dimensions are accurate.
Inspect, feel, and measure workpieces to ensure that surfaces and dimensions meet specifications.
Monitor machine operations to determine whether adjustments are necessary; stop machines when problems occur.
Select and mount grinding wheels on machines, according to specifications, using hand tools and applying knowledge of abrasives and grinding procedures.
Set up and operate grinding or polishing machines to grind metal workpieces such as dies, parts, and tools.
Straighten workpieces and remove dents, using straightening presses and hammers.
Study blueprints or layouts of metal workpieces to determine grinding procedures, and to plan machine setups and operational sequences.
Turn valves to direct flow of coolant against cutting wheels and workpieces during grinding.
Dress grinding wheels, according to specifications.
Inspect dies to detect defects, assess wear, and verify specifications, using micrometers, steel gauge pins, and loupes.
Perform basic maintenance, such as cleaning and lubricating machine parts.
Remove and replace worn or broken machine parts, using hand tools.
Remove finished workpieces from machines and place them in boxes or on racks; set aside pieces that are defective.
Preparing the machine for grinding operations (setting)
Grinding, deburring and polishing workpieces to bring them to the desired shape and dimensions, in accordance with the design specifications
Mounting and dismounting workpieces on/from the grinding machine
Checking finished pieces (quality control)
Reporting any machining or fabrication defects or imperfections
Carrying out maintenance of grinding machine and cutting tools
Keeping work area clean and orderly


  • The successful candidate must have a High School Diploma or accredited GED and 0-1 years of experience
  • Manufacturing work experience or mechanical background strongly preferred.
  • Must be willing and able to work any shift.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and weekends as required.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
