Responsibilities

Plan and perform a wide range of exacting machining operations requiring difficult set-ups to maintain close tolerances and high accuracy as well as good workmanship.  Perform skilled bench work, fitting, finishing and assembling tools and dies.  Trouble shooting of tools, detect faulty operation and make necessary corrections.

 

This work involves a wide range of machine and bench operations requiring skills and thorough knowledge of tool making practices; ability to make correct decisions as to allowances, sequence and method of machining and assembling.

 

  • Construct, alter, and repair a wide variety of tools, jigs, fixtures, dies and gauges where drawings or sketches are usually available, but occasionally may work from verbal instructions.
  • Make necessary mathematical calculations relating to machining and checking of tools and select allowances for spring, lapping, grinding, scraping, heat treating, fitting and finishing.
  • Recognize and report print errors in design or dimensions and suggest possible improvements and/or improve operation of the tool.
  • Construct experimental models/prototypes where the design may be available but requiring some development work as to details and minor mechanisms. 
  • Work from temporary drawings, sketches, verbal instructions and develop the methods of machining and assembly. 
  • Develop and construct temporary tooling to produce required parts. 
  • Set up and operate a variety of machining tools to produce work of high quality and close tolerances.
  • Assist test, development, and manufacturing engineers in preparing devices or samples for testing.
  • Report all unusual conditions to Group Leader and/or Supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude a plus
  • Ability to translate prints along with understanding of GD&T
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Shop Math Skills
  • Proficiency in the use of a wide variety of precision measuring tools are required.
  • Able to bend, stoop, stand, kneel, and lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
  • Ability to read CNC code and interact with machine control.
